The Nature of Our Fabrics
Linen and hemp, as nature intended.
Why we choose natural fibres
Long before there were synthetics, there was flax and there was hemp — plants that people have spun and woven for thousands of years. I have always believed that what we sleep in, dry ourselves with and live among every day should come from nature, and feel like it.
Yet linen of this quality has rarely been within easy reach. Joyce Essentials began with a simple wish: to bring the quiet luxury of natural fabrics into every home, at a price that feels fair.
“Natural living, natural healing.
Affordable price, superior quality.”
— Joyce, Founder
Linen, the fabric of good sleep
Linen is spun from the fibres of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum — a slender stem crowned with pale blue flowers that has clothed and comforted people across many cultures for thousands of years.
In the bedroom, its gifts are quiet but constant. Linen breathes, drawing moisture away and letting air move freely, so the bed feels cool on summer nights and comfortably warm in winter. It dries quickly and stays fresh between washes.
Our linen is crafted using traditional techniques and washed several times before it reaches you, so it feels soft and inviting from the very first night — and grows softer with every wash after that. It is left free of starch and added chemicals.
Hemp, strength made gentle
Hemp fabric is woven from the stem fibres of industrial hemp, Cannabis sativa, one of the oldest textile plants known. It is prized above all for its strength: a fabric made to be used, washed and loved for many years.
Hemp has a reputation as a coarse, rugged fibre. Ours is washed several times during making, which transforms it into something surprisingly soft, with a relaxed, natural texture and a strength that never fades.
Like linen, it breathes beautifully and dries quickly. And like all our fabrics, it is left free of starch, finishes and added chemicals — true to its nature.

Caring for natural fabrics
A little care, and your linen and hemp will last for many years.
Wash gently
Machine wash at 30–40°C with a mild detergent.
Skip softener
Natural fibres soften on their own. Fabric softener and bleach only weaken them.
Line dry
Dry outdoors or on a line where possible, or tumble dry on low and remove while slightly damp.
Embrace the creases
Soft creases are part of linen's relaxed charm. Iron while damp if you prefer a crisper look.
Frequently asked
Will my linen shrink?
Because our fabrics are washed several times during making, most shrinkage has already happened before they reach you. A small amount of further settling is natural with the first washes.
Does linen feel rough at first?
Not ours. Washing during production means it feels soft from the first night, and it continues to soften with every wash.
Should I choose linen or hemp?
Choose linen for bedding if you love a cool, airy, relaxed feel. Choose hemp if you prefer a more substantial, textured fabric with exceptional durability. Both breathe beautifully and soften over time.
Are your fabrics treated with chemicals?
No. Our linen and hemp are left free of starch, finishes and added chemicals.
